Camera for Digiscoping with a Vortex Razor Scope

Hi -

I presently have a Vortex HD Razor HD 20-60x85 Straight Spotting scope, the Vortex Razor DCA-VT-RZR-DA (both purchased from Eagle Optics!), and use an old Nikon P6000 as the camera. Recently, the P6000 has died and I am in the market to purchase a camera that fits my present Vortex set up. I am a Nikon user so would prefer that but other manufactures are fine.

I appreciate any compatibility advice you can give me to help me outfit this great scope.

Thanks,
Steve

Dear Steve,
Thanks for your interest in Eagle Optics.

Basically any point and shoot with a small body and below 4x optical zoom will work, Nikon or otherwise.
The market changes so much and so fast that I can’t recommend a specific camera to work.

If the camera you buy to use with the Razor Digital Camera Adapter (which I’m assuming you own and have been using?) does not have a filter thread adapter made for it, you’ll need to get a Vortex PS100 bracket to provide the camera with 37mm filter threads:

Hopefully this answers your question.
If not, our staff will be happy to help.

Thanks!

Which point and shoot camera for digiscoping?

Hi,

I have an Eagle Optics Raven spotting scope with 78mm objective lens and 20-60 zoom.

I would like to start digiscoping and read some of the articles from your website.

Would you recommend any particular camera to go with the spotting scope I have?

Dear Tom,
Thanks for your interest in Eagle Optics.

In order to digiscope with your Raven, you’ll need this adapter:  http://www.eagleoptics.com/digital-camera-adapters/vortex/vortex-universal-28-45mm-small-digital-camera-adapter plus a small-bodied, point and shoot camera with a below 4x optical zoom.

The cameras with high powered optical zoom capability will not work at all, so you’ll want to look for below a 4x optical zoom.

B&H has a good selection of inexpensive point and shoot cameras that should work well with the Raven and adapter linked above.

Thanks!

Gitzo tripod legs with non-Gitzo heads?

Dear Eagle Optics,
I have just been given a gift of a Swarovski ATM 80 mm HD scope for birdwatching!  It’s my 50th birthday present from my family.  Now it’s up to me to figure out the tripod and head.  I have a friend who will give me a Gitzo 2531 carbon fiber leg system.  Can I mount a Swarovski DH101 on the Gitzo legs?

Your website is very helpful, and you seem genuinely interested in helping customers.  Can you sell me just the head, assuming it is compatible with the Gitzo legs?

Thanks,

Jennifer

Dear Jennifer,
Happy birthday and thanks for your interest in Eagle Optics.
Unfortunately, the non Gitzo heads aren’t a good match for Gitzo legs.
The top of the Gitzo center columns have some gnurls that catch onto the bottom of the gitzo heads, and the Swarovski heads (and others) don’t attach the same way.

I’d recommend either the Gitzo 2180 head or one of the birdwatching heads. http://www.eagleoptics.com/tripod-heads?query=Gitzo

Thanks!
