Will my photo tripod set-up also work for a spotting scope?

Hi Eagle Optics,

I am planning to order a Vortex Razor HD 20-60x85 Spotting Scope from you guys this autumn. I’ve got a few questions about pairing an adequate tripod and head that I’m hoping you can answer:

For photography, I own a Manfrotto 054 Mag ball head with Q2 release and .

Are these beefy enough to use with the Vortex Razor HD 20-60x85 Spotting Scope?

What sort of mounting connection does the Razor have? Can I screw in my Manfrotto QR plate?

What sort of head do people typically use with scopes of this size?

Thank you for your expertise!

Hi Drew,

Thanks for your inquiry.  The Razor scope has a standard 1/4"-20 threaded hole in the foot, so it does accept standard quick release plates.  I wouldn’t recommend using that Razor scope with your current ball head--for sturdiness and ease of use, it won’t be ideal.

The types of tripod heads that are used most frequently for spotting scopes are micro-fluid video heads, with two-way panning and a pan-arm attached. One of our most popular is the   This head will be compatible with the leg set you already have, and together they should be a good and sturdy set up with the Razor.

I hope this helps. Feel free to call if you have any other questions!
